Delaware River, New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Spring
Paddled 182 miles in 5 and a half days last week with two of my adventure buddies. Heavy thunderstorms on the first night and determination allowed for two 50+ mile days. There were big waves on the Upper Delaware but the wildlife we observed further south, on my favorite island on the river, stole the show. We arrived there early in the day and set up camp before heading into the brush to explore. Mike and Patrick spotted bear scat right away and though it was hard to imagine that I had been sharing the island when I was here a couple weeks ago, we set out to find them. "If I were a bear I would be over there," I said, pointing to the Northwest corner. We headed that way and right when we felt like giving up, as I took a picture through the trees, Patrick and Mike spotted a turkey, then Patrick saw something in a tree and found these little guys. When we were just starting out, I joked that maybe we would see bears, before we saw the scat, and asked him to grab my long lens when he went back to camp. He pulled it from his pack and handed it to me. I began to walk towards them which probably wasn't the best idea since we had no idea where mama was. Thankfully my buddies kept an eye out while I snapped away and wisely recommended we retreat once I got my shots and the cubs stopped playing. Later that night, a fearless flying squirrel came to check out my boat and a fawn jumped into the river directly across from our camp. In the morning, a bobcat explored the bank across from us as we prepared to launch. Big thanks the river, the friends that joined me to travel and all the creatures we saw along the way.
